Community Champions Gala

Community Champions Gala
organized by Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Atlanta (formerly AALAC)
Sonjui Kumar - Chair.

Each year, we recognize our local superheroes and thank them for their hard work and dedication through a formal sit down gala. The gala honors individuals who have dedicated their lives to furthering the civil, social and economic rights of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in Georgia.
The gala is our largest event of the year, typically attracting 350-400 guests, including many elected officials, dignitaries, business leaders, and touchsones of several diverse local Asian American community groups. This event brings together the established leaders of our local AANHPI community.
Keynote Speaker: Derreck Kayongo, CEO of Center for Civil and Human Rights
Rising Star Community Champion: Aisha Yaqoob of the Georgia Muslim Voter Project

Aisha Yaqoob is the Founder & Executive Director of the Georgia Muslim Voter Project - a new initiative to increase voter registration and turnout in the Muslim community in Georgia. Through this nonprofit, nonpolitical organization, she hopes to educate community members about the importance of voting and civic engagement while increasing voter turnout for presidential, state, and local elections. Yaqoob will completed her Masters of Public Ad ministration from the University of Georgia in May 2016. Her undergraduate degree in Journalism/Public Relations is also from the University of Georgia. Yaqoob has worked and volunteered with various Atlanta area organizations including the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta, Al-Falah Academy, and Atlanta Muslim, just to name a few. She is involved in her local community through initiatives like the Gwinnett County Building Bridges event, where county officials invited members of the Muslim Community to meet and build relationships. Previously, she also served on the City of Suwanee’s Downtown Redevelopment Committee, where she helped to guide the city’s redevelopment efforts.
