Upanishads convey the gist of spiritual knowledge of the Vedas because that discipline of knowledge is the most important for us to be guided on the righteous path.
The Rishis wrote the Upanishads to shed light on the hidden meanings of Vedas. There are more than 100 Upanishads, but 11 of them are considered more authoritative than others. Scholars of the Arya Samaj have written extensively on the Upanishads and they have followed the Key to Interpretation codified by Maharshi Swami Dayananda Saraswati.
