“Sufi Music of India and Pakistan: Feudal Ritual to Global Challenge”

“Sufi Music of India and Pakistan: Feudal Ritual to Global Challenge”
Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies
and South Asia Seminar Series are pleased to present:
Dr. Regula Qureshi, Emeritus Professor, University of Alberta

Islamic musical traditions have undergone extensive processes of globalization, and some repertoires--such as the Sufi Qawwali--are inseparable from world music today. This lecture explores the relationship between Qawwali as sacred music and as world music. The question being raised is whether globalization, operating transnationally and across historical time, has the potential to transform sacred music into world music? Does it eliminate traditional forms of belief or enhance them?

Note: Prior to Dr. Qureshi's lecture, there will be a performance of North Indian classical music, with Anjaneya Sastry on Tabla and Scott Kugle on Sarangi.

Date: Thursday, November 16, 2017
Time: 4pm
Venue: Carlos Museum, Ackerman Hall, Emory University, Atlanta Contact: jmcghee@emory.edu
