Swami Vivekananda deeply changed the spiritual thought current in America, during the late 19th Century. He did this in just seven years, between July 25, 1893, when the SS Empress India stopped for quarantine in Victoria, British Columbia, and July 25, 1900, when he sailed for France on the SS Champagne.

This “cyclonic monk,” often in poor health, drove himself from city to city to begin the work of Vedanta in America. He personally founded Vedanta Societies in New York and San Francisco; his students started many others throughout the nation. Our Vedanta Center of Atlanta has its roots in the Vivekananda Vedanta Society of Chicago – the city where Vivekananda's teachings were first celebrated.

So, it is with profound gratitude and reverence that we will perform a worship service (puja) this Sunday, to honor Swami Vivekananda’s birth. The puja begins at 11AM, and will be followed by a prasad potluck lunch. (If you are so moved, please bring food to share.)
