“Writing India’s Environmental History”

The Indian (sub)continent (encompassing present-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) has long been the site of powerful and interacting environmental forces. The relatively young but rapidly expanding interdisciplinary field of environmental history has also been the site of deeply contested efforts to frame and advance our understanding of vital patterns of interactions among humans, other living beings, and the material world. This talk will highlight some of these key environmental forces and these historiographical methodologies and ideologies.
