Puppet Masters: Wayang Kulit and
the Ramayana Epic in Indonesia, a lecture-demonstration

Pak Midiyanto will demonstrate the art of Javanese shadow puppet drama (Wayang Kulit), featuring exquisitely crafted figures that move through postures of dance, mudras of magical power, and battles of kung-fu dexterity. He and James Hoesterey will discuss the development of Wayang Kulit from its roots in South Asian narratives to its sustaining power in Muslim-majority Indonesia. The event will also include Indonesian food and live music.
