MOVIE REVIEW: I Love NY

I Love NY

Starring: Sunny Deol, Kangana Ranaut, Navin Chowdhry
Director: Radhika Rao, Vinay Sapru
Music Director: Pritam

Wondering what the NY stands for in the title? Well, New York for one, as well as New Year, You see, that’s where and when all the action takes place in this film that is inspired by the 1976 Soviet rom-com, The Irony of Fate. Having been released after many hiccups, I Love NY has really nothing new to offer, except the odd pairing of the aged and jaded Sunny Deol, and the pretty Kangana Ranaut of the pre-Queen days. However, the movie is watchable, courtesy some funny scenes and the earnest, if not compelling, performances by its cast.

A funny turn of events on New Year’s Eve lands the commitment-phobic Chicago-based banker, Randhir Singh (Sunny Deol) in New York at the same street address as his address in Chicago, in the bedroom of a house where an orphaned music teacher, Tikku Verma (Kangana Ranaut) lives with her flatmate Vidya. The weird situation creates misunderstandings between Tikku and her boyfriend Ishaan (British TV actor Navin Chowdhry). Though the premise is farfetched and the writing lacks credibility, some scenes do evoke a few laughs and some emotional ones touch you.

Though Sunny Deol and Kangana Ranaut are miscast as a romantic pair, it’s to their credit that they give it their best shot. Kudos to Sunny, for being brave enough to get out of his comfort zone this time. Navin Chowdhry has an irritating accent but pitches in a decent act as the possessive boyfriend.

So watch I Love NY only if you are a die-hard fan of love stories, however illogical they might be, or a Kangana fan. But do remember this is Kangana before she became Queen of celluloid!
