Starring: Priyanka Chopra, Manav Kaul, Prakash Jha
Director: Prakash Jha
Music Director: Salim-Sulaiman
Jai GangaaJal is a complete throwback to Gangaajal of 2003. But there are hangings here instead of blindings. And of course, Priyanka Chopra steps into Ajay Devgn’s shoes. Now the big surprise—Prakash Jha gives himself a meaty role, giving strong competition to his heroine! As corrupt cop Bhola Nath Singh with a latent conscience, he is a revelation and while his acting may not be brilliant, for a debut performance, it is certainly clapworthy. In fact, what makes Jai GangaaJal watchable are the performances by Jha and Priyanka, notwithstanding the fact that it is overly long, and what’s worse, terribly unoriginal.
Priyanka plays Abha Mathur, the tough, no-nonsense Superintendent of Police of Bankipur district in Bihar, a place that reeks of corruption and greedy cops. The actress with a body well suited for the action genre, is impressive in these scenes and also tries her best to lend gravitas to the dramatic scenes, but what takes away from the impact is her glossed up look at all times.
The dependable Manav Kaul is all fire and brimstone as the vicious politician, Babloo Pandey, and the best scenes are the ones featuring Priyanka and him. The other supporting cast deliver fine performances, too.
For those who expect Jai GangaaJal to be a worthy followup to Gangaajal, the movie might be a letdown. And a bit of a drag—too many sermons on the sanctity of the khaki uniform. But if you don’t have too many expectations from it, you might find it fairly watchable, especially when Priyanka is thrashing the goondas with her laathi!
