Love Aaj Kal

Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Rishi Kapoor

Director: Imtiaz Ali

Music Director: Pritam

After Jab We Met, expectations from Imtaz Ali were high. But no, he doesn’t disappoint at all. Love Aaj Kal makes a compelling watch for primarily two reasons: The crackling characterisations that are straight out of life, and the crisp and concise dialogues that are completely in sync with modern lingo. Pritam’s foot-tapping music only adds to the delightful ambience.

Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika) aren’t your run-of-the-mill couple. When Meera proposes to move from London to Delhi to pursue her career as a restoration artist, they both mutually agree to sever their year-long relationship. But they still keep in touch as friends. It’s only after many twists and turns that Jai realises that he isn’t much different from the diehard-romantic vintage sardar Veer (Rishi Kapoor). Saif, wearing a turban, interestingly plays his younger version. There is a real charm in this sepia-toned tale of love. The director effortlessly straddles the two eras to show that basically the experience of love remains the same, whether today or back in the 60s. Only the expressions of the emotion have changed.

Deepika as the modern Meera with her strong sense of individuality looks good and does her best to imbue life into her character. Brazilian model Giselle Monteiro as the demure Harleen Kaur is winsome. But it is quite easily the charming (and goofy) Saif who steals the show by lending so many shades to his character, to make it seem really real.

Love Aaj Kal actually holds up a mirror to the commitment phobia of the young, successful professionals of today. So go watch it for its absolutely Gen Now appeal. The film also throws up an innocent query: What’s wrong in being a little old-fashioned?
