Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

Starring: Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Supriya Pathak, Richa Chaddha

Director: SanjayLeela Bhansali

Music Directors: Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Monty Sharma

It’s impossible to remain indifferent to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films. You either love his signature style—visual opulence, elaborately choreographed dances and a loud, over dramatic pitch throughout—or you hate his cinema for precisely the very same reasons. But the one thing that probably everyone in the audience watching this adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will find enthralling is Bhansali’s passionate celebration of love as manifested in the electrifying chemistry between his Ram and Leela, played with a searing intensity by Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.

Set in the fictional small town of Ranjhar in Kutch, Gujarat, Ram Leela is a love-cum-vendetta saga. While the first half of Ram Leela is immensely watchable, courtesy the building up of love and passion between the lead, post-interval the energy and pace dip when violence takes over, drowning the love story. The plot falters a bit here and things get tedious and over stretched for a while, testing your patience.

There are some terrific supporting performances, mainly by Supriya Pathak as the ruthless matriarch, Richa Chaddha as Leela’s sister-in-law and debutant Barkha Bisht Sengupta as Ram’s sister-in-law. Ranveer Singh throws himself full throttle in his role but it is Deepika Padukone as the feisty and fearless Leela, who steals the show.

So overlook the flaws and savor the sensuousness. You will not be able to take your eyes off the screen when Ram and his Leela scorch it up. It helps that they can act as well.
