What happens when Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap, two filmmakers with very different cinematic sensibilities, join hands to produce a film? An experiment that results in a quirky romantic comedy that shatters several stereotypes. Hasee Toh Phasee is certainly not your conventional romcom. The title is a misnomer. Its unusual storyline and consummate acting and direction lift it head and shoulders above other films of this done-to-death genre, some clichés notwithstanding.
The debutant director, along with the writer, gives the ubiquitous Bollywood love triangle and the wedding backdrop a very welcome fresh treatment here with an attempt to keep it real. Bereft of any melodrama, yet emotional, sans any slapstick comedy, yet humorous, Hasee Toh Phasee has that elusive quality about it—finesse. So you wonder if there really was a need to have so many songs! Some of them are nice, though.
The movie without a doubt belongs to Parineeti Chopra. This is her fourth release, and again, she’s the best thing in it. She is terrific as Meeta, the pill-popping, brilliant scientist in the making. Essaying a complicated, multi-layered character is by no means easy but Parineeti does it with a natural flourish, without appearing in the least bit caricaturish. She has a palpable chemistry with Sidharth Malhotra, who as the confused yet good boy Nikhil, pitches in a charming act. Holding their own against the wonderful lead actors are a bunch of supporting actors.
