Ek Villain

Starring: Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh
Producer: Ekta Kapoor
Director: Mohit Suri
Music Directors: Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari

Inspired by Korean revenge flick, I Saw The Devil, Ek Villain makes for a pretty engrossing watch, some inanities and logic issues notwithstanding. It is also quite a violent film but the good thing is that the tender romantic track provides a pleasant respite from the sinister goings-on, for those in the audience who have no taste for blood and gore.

Guru (Sidharth Malhotra) is a hardened assassin whose life changes when he meets and falls in love with the good-hearted sprightly chatterbox, Aisha (Shraddha Kapoor). Enter the villain, a psychotic serial killer, Rakesh (Riteish Deshmukh), a middle class man fighting his inner demons. How the lives of the three intertwine forms the crux of this edgy romantic thriller.

Sidharth Malhotra tries very hard to play the sullen gangster but the guy is just too soft looking to look the part, though he is good in scenes which require him to showcase his brooding intensity. Shraddha Kapoor lights up the screen with her pretty presence and comes up with a surprisingly credible performance as the selfless do-gooder who meets a tragic end.

But the one who steals the thunder is Riteish Deshmukh, making a smashing debut as the antagonist. Speaking very little, Riteish lets his eyes—both dead and eloquent at the same time—do the talking. You can’t take your eyes off him when he’s on the screen. Kamaal R. Khan playing Riteish’s lecherous friend, springs a surprise.

The music with its soulful quality is a winner, especially the Banjara number. Prachi Desai sizzles in an unusually soft item number.

On the whole, this is pretty compelling commercial cinema.
