Mallika Sherawat has bagged the role of Naagin—the Snake Woman in a Bollywood film of the same name. What makes this film different is that its director is Hollywood filmmaker Jennifer Lynch of Surveillance fame. Which makes Jennifer the first Hollywood director to shoot a Hindi film. The movie, which has an Indian cast and an American villain, will be shot in Chennai and Kerala.

Siddharth of Rang De Basanti fame has agreed in principle to play Hamlet in Onir’s adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy. Buzz is that Soha Ali Khan will be cast as Ophelia and Shabana Azmi and Boman Irani will play Queen Gertrude and King Polonius, respectively.

Ranbir Kapoor is set to star opposite Konkona Sen Sharma in a film that will be directed by Kajol’s cousin. To be produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the film is Ayaan Mukherjee’s directorial debut.

MOVIE REVIEW

Jaane Tu?Ya Jaane Na

Starring: Imran Khan, Genelia D’Souza, Prateik Babbar, Ratna Pathak Shah

Producer: Aamir Khan

Director: Abbas Tyrewala

Music Director: AR Rahman

Aamir Khan has done it again, though only as producer and not as director this time. There is a freshness about Jaane Tu?Ya Jaane Na—which makes it a charming watch despite its ‘done to death’ theme. The film’s undeniable assets are its pleasant and youthful lead pair, a terrific musical score by AR Rahman and some riveting cameos by the supporting cast. Above all, there’s a fine restraint throughout and it never goes ‘over the top’. Kudos to debutant director Abbas Tyrewala.

Jaane Tu? is about a group of college friends, with the focus being on two special buddies, Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D’Souza). Everyone, including their families, think that the two are just perfect for each other. Only the couple in question doesn’t seem to realize this. They spend half the movie looking for a suitable match for each other. This part is thoroughly enjoyable.

In the second half, Jai and Aditi come to terms with their real feelings for each other. This part, unfortunately, is too prolonged. Even the climax, though well shot, is too cliched and filmi, unlike the earlier part, which has some real moments. Nonetheless, you carry back happy memories of this basically simple, Archie-Jughead-Veronica-Betty kind of tale.

Aamir’s nephew Imran Khan has done his famous uncle proud. Armed with a boyish charm, a disarming smile and expressive eyes, the guy sure is the new Khan on the block. While Genelia is spontaneity personified, the late Smita Patil’s son, Prateik Babbar, makes an interesting debut as her brother. Watch out for a great act by Ratna Pathak Shah as the new-age mom, and Naseeruddin Shah as the ‘dancing dead thakur’ who talks from a photo frame!

Go treat yourself to this breezy entertainer, which has taken the audience, especially the youth, by storm.
