Good Sports: HOUSING FOR THE HOMELESS
Akash Kalia, 24, dropped out of college in 2012 to take over his parents’ motel in Santa Rosa, California. He planned to revive the struggling business by providing lodging to construction and trade workers, but upon the suggestion of his attorney, decided to help needy people instead.
As reported by The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, the 104-room Palms Inn is being transformed to offer permanent housing for 60 veterans and 44 homeless adults. The tenants will pay a portion of their income toward rent, with the rest coming from state and federal sources.
“There’s more to life than just making a bunch of money or running a business,” Kalia said. “It’s about helping others.”
