Good Sports: Pitching on the Big Screen

When two Indian teens who had never played baseball were discovered by sports agent J.B. Bernstein through the reality show The Million Dollar Arm in 2008 and signed as pitchers by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, it seemed like a fairy tale, the stuff of Disney movies.  It shouldn’t be a surprise then that Disney has indeed made a movie about Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, never mind that their baseball careers didn’t quite play out as they had hoped.

Singh, who continues to pitch in the minor leagues, is portrayed by Life of Pi star Suraj Sharma, while Madhur Mittal plays the role of Patel, who no longer plays baseball.

“It’s amazing how accurate the movie is. It’s like reliving those moments, good and bad,” Bernstein told the New York Daily News. “I was a fish out of water in India; Rinku and Dinesh were fish out of water here.”
