Teachers have made a difference in the lives of many of us, and their selfless service deserves recognition. Gwinnett County Public Schools has announced its local teachers of the year 2019-2020, and one is Gulannar Akhtar Rattani, Algebra I Teacher–Gear Up for Graduation Program (Grade 8, Moore Middle School, Lawrenceville, GA).

“Our Teachers of the Year exemplify the high expectations that our Gwinnett parents and community have for every teacher in every classroom,” Dr. Jonathan Patterson, Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Support said in a press release. “They are selected by their peers because of the great things they do for students every day, and they are models of excellence for their colleagues as well.”

Ms. Rattani graduated from Kennesaw State University in 2015 with a B.S. in Secondary Mathematics Education. A dedicated teacher, she is known for paying money from her own pocket, as many teachers do, in her case $20 to $40 a month to purchase supplies like an electric pencil sharpener, hand sanitizer, and tissues. Recently, she assisted an art teacher in creating an infinity room as a quiet reading space for students in the media center of their school; the installation was featured in the Gwinnett Daily Post. She strives to build meaningful relationships with her students and encourages them to believe that they can be successful in math regardless of their past experiences.

This was recognized by her peers, as they voted her to the top for her school’s Teacher of the Year award.

UPDATE:
Gulannar Rattani is now a semifinalist for Gwinnett school district’s top honor.
