Simi Shah – makes it to Harvard!

To pursue a career in international affairs and economics, Simi Shah, a senior at Peachtree Ridge High School, will move to Cambridge later this year to earn a degree at Harvard University.

For Simi, this has been the result of a tireless four years of getting involved in her school and local community and taking on leadership roles. Academically strong (a Finalist for the National Merit Scholarship Award), Simi is active in many organizaitons: president of the South Asian Student Association, the Student Government Association, the local chapter of Future Business Leaders of America and president of FBLA Region 11. She was also happy to raise $20,000 for Relay for Life by hosting a 5K race at school with a fellow classmate.

Her most recent honor was related to one of her talents: thoughtful and perceptive writing, some of which can be seen online at AtlantaDarpan.com. This summer she was recognized by the New York Times as a winner in their Summer Writing Contest when she wrote about “television with heart.”

Simi hopes to set a fine example for other aspiring Indian-Americans with similar goals. “A high GPA and SAT score is only the first step,” she advises. “It’s everything else: showing your face, the extra-curricular and personal initiative, that takes you a step further and beyond.”

Meticulous planning and determination allowed her to achieve this feat. She reminds all students: “If I was told four years ago that this was a possibility, I would never have believed it. Easy opportunities may be laid out for you, but if you take the initiative and start early, anything is possible. When you enter high school, you will have to start at the bottom of the ladder and show your capabilities to work yourself up! I’m a living testament to that fact.”
