January 26, 1961
– The United States Postal Service issues 120 million 4 cent stamps and 40 million 8 cent stamps honoring Mahatma Gandhi in the “Champions of Liberty” series.

The US was the second country in the world to issue a stamp honoring Mahatma Gandhi after India.
