Chess prodigy Ananya Roy on a winning spree

Marietta resident Ananya, the daughter of Sharmila and Subhojit Roy, is a rising young chess champion who has already raked in a handful of awards over the past year, both at the state and national levels. As an 8th grader in 2005, she won first place in the middle school category at the Georgia Scholastic Open Individual Championship. But that was just a start for this prodigy. In January this year, Ananya secured second place in the under 16 and 18 combined category at the All-Girls Open National Championships. Held by the Gary Kasparov Chess Foundation in Chicago, this was their third annual competition. She won another second place in the first annual Susan Polgar National Open Championships for girls under 21. More than 210 players, reportedly the highest number ever in a nationwide all-girls contest, participated in the tournament. Ananya's continuing string of victories includes a first position in the high school category at the Scholastic Martin Luther Chess Tournament. This is one of the two biggest open scholastic tournaments organized by the Georgia Chess Association.
