A bagful of gifts for the festive season

A bagful of gifts for the festive season

This being the season of festivals, what better time is there for children – or, for that matter, adults – to reconnect with their heritage? There is much to celebrate, of course, but these final months of the year also provide an opportunity for learning and introspection. For many ethnic and cultural groups nowadays, there is no dearth of events or activities in a city like Atlanta. And immigrant families now have easy access to resources such as books, CDs, DVDs, games – all of which can be purchased with the click of a mouse. Take Meera Masi as an example. Founded by Sonali Sahni Herrera and Sheetal Sahni Singhal, it's a publishing and retail enterprise that specializes in products for children of Indian heritage. Their Diwali: Khushiyon Ka Tyohaar is a dual language book that "animates the traditions and liveliness of Diwali to children through rhyme, captivating pictures, and a read along CD providing both Hindi and English text." They also offer The Khushe Manao Series, a set of books and a CD for young kids, and a Laddoo the Elephant DVD that helps them learn Hindi, Telugu or Tamil. Desi Knowledge, on the other hand, is an online bookstore that sells Amar Chitra Katha comics, children's books, CDs, DVDs and CD-ROMs for various age groups.
