Amar Chitra Katha for the Digital Generation
The stories are old—in fact, most of them are drawn from India’s classical literature—but the technology for accessing them is new.
Yes, now you can download the popular Amar Chitra Katha (ACK) comics on iPhones and iPods. In the digital age, reading ageless tales from the Mahabharata and Ramayana has never been easier, thanks to a mobile content delivery framework called Ether Media. It was developed by iRemedi, an Atlanta-based IT firm, enabling them to partner with ACK and bring their comics to a tech-savvy generation weaned on 21st-century gadgets. About 15 titles are available so far, with 200 more in the pipeline. The images are crisp and the text, even on a screen, is perfectly readable. It’s easy to scroll through the panels.
One can go to the Apple iTune store on the Web and do a search by entering ‘Amar Chitra Katha’ or ‘iRemedi’ or the title of a comic book. A few free previews are available, though most titles cost $1.99 each for downloading.
“Rich media creators such as ACK can leverage our Ether Media solution to bring their beloved content to the iPhone community relatively fast,” notes Sridhar Bhat, CEO and founder of iRemedi.
Some titles already available for downloading: Ashoka, The Gita, Buddha, Krishna, Shakuntala, Panchatantra Tales, Mirabai, Karna and Bheeshma. So far, ACK has reportedly sold 90 million print copies of its more than 400 comic book titles.
