Hoover Medal for Former President Kalam
WHAT it is: Annual award given to an engineer whose professional achievements and personal endeavors advance the well-being of humankind in a selfless way. Jointly awarded by five engineering societies, the Hoover Medal was established in 1929.

WHY he won: For making state-of-the-art medical care available in India at affordable prices. For promoting telemedicine projects that connect remote and super-specialty hospitals. For creating links amongst doctors, technocrats and bureaucrats to make rural health care accessible. For developing useful products through the Society of Biomedical Technology (SBMT).
WHERE it was awarded: At Columbia University, New York, on April 28, 2009.
WHO else won it: Over the years, the Hoover Medal has been conferred on, among others, former Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter.
