India Remains Top Outsourcing Firm

The global business environment may be in turmoil, but the good news for the Indian outsourcing industry, at least for now, is that six of the world’s top eight hubs are still in India. According to Global Services, a media outlet for the IT and BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) industry, they are as follows: (1) Bangalore, (2) Chennai, (3) Delhi/National Capital Region, (4) Hyderabad, (5) Mumbai, and (6) Pune.

Also, based on Dataquest’s ranking, Global Services picked the following as the top 10 Indian BPOs of 2008: (1) Genpact, (2) Aditya Birla Minacs, (3) TCS BPO, (4) IBM Daksh, (5) WNS Global Services, (6) Firstsource Solutions, (7) Wipro BPO, (8) Infosys BPO, (9) Cambridge Solutions, and (10) HCL BPO.

Among the top 50 emerging cities for global outsourcing, India has only four: (1) Kolkata, (2) Chandigarh, (3) Coimbatore, and (4) Jaipur. Most of these emerging hubs are tier 2 and tier 3 cities, widely expected to play a more prominent role in the coming years. Now there are also tier 4 “cities”—which are actually towns in rural India. Lower costs are the big draw, providing much needed employment, although challenges like poor infrastructure and an inadequately trained workforce remain. One success story is Karunapally, in the coastal district of Kollam, Kerala, where Sai BPO provides back office support to perhaps 40 European and American companies.

India’s BPO industry, now worth $11 billion, employs over 700,000 workers.
