Rajendra Pachauri
WHO: RAJENDRA PACHAURI, Environmental factors, chief of UN panel on climate change.
WHY: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore.
WHAT HE SAID: “I can’t believe it; I’m overwhelmed, stunned. I was not expecting any award for my efforts. I feel privileged to share it with Al Gore. I’m only a symbolic recipient but it is the organization which has been awarded. With this award to the committee, the issue of climate change will come to the fore. It places a larger responsibility on me and I’ll ensure that more will be done.”
WORTH NOTING: About five years ago, Gore and Pachauri had a spat over the latter’s election as IPCC boss. In 2002, Gore had termed Pachauri as “let’s drag our feet” candidate and anti-American when he was backed by the U.S. administration for the top post of IPCC?Pachauri received a congratulatory call from Al Gore immediately after the Nobel Prize was announced.
