Good Sports: GIVING KIDS A “CHANCE FOR SPORTS”

Anuva Shandilya, a senior at Neuqua Valley
High School in Naperville, Illinois, has played a variety
of sports in her life and doesn’t take the opportunity
for granted. Having visited 24 countries,
she knows that sports equipment is unaffordable
for many children around the world. That’s why,
three years ago, she founded Chance for Sports,
a nonprofit organization that collects gently used
sports equipment for needy children.

So far, the organization has collected more
than 3,400 pieces of sports equipment, worth
about $32,500, to distribute to
children in the United States
and four other countries: India,
Zambia, Haiti, and Mexico.

She has handed out some
of the equipment herself, during trips
to India and Mexico. “I like to do it personally,”
she told The Daily Herald, adding that “there are so
many kids who don’t have the same opportunities
as me.”
