Risha Hegde, a senior
at Wheeler High School,
Marietta, GA, and a Girl
Scout since she was in Grade
2, has earned the Girl
Scout’s Gold Award for her
project, “Girls Run the Cloud,”
which aims to inspire more
girls to develop interest in STEM
education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Math).
After seeing few girls in her AP Computer Science Principles class, Risha decided to create a project to inspire girls to get interested in this rapidly growing field. She designed and conducted STEM workshops, one in Marietta and one in Karnataka, India.
For more than a year, Risha researched useful STEM topics to learn, enlisted experts, speakers, and volunteers to help with project tasks, created a workshop curriculum, raised funds, secured venues, and created and distributed publicity material. From the funds she raised, she also donated a laptop to the school in India, so the students there could keep exploring computers and technology. The students were so happy with her workshops that she is willing to continue the presentations.

“My mom made me come to this because I don’t like anything to do with computers. But, after
seeing EarSketch, I really enjoyed using it! I love music and I thought it was cool that you put
computers and music together.” – USA workshop.
I really don’t know much about computers! I’m surprised to see how much you know about
technology at such a young age!” -India workshop
