Switching gears from thrillers, Director Arindam Sil's latest offering " Durga Sohay" takes you down the road of women empowerment and inner strength of our very own Durgas. In this process, he provides us with a wonderful film that needs to be savored in theaters. Being one of the lucky few to have seen it at a preview, it's safe to say that the film evokes " Bangaliyana" that permeates your senses and engulfs you totally ! Based on a story by Debleena Bandyopadhyay and a smart screenplay by Padmanabha Dasgupta and Arindam himself, the film starts on Mahalaya day and takes you through the annual Durgotsav held at the " bonedi" Bashak family of North Kolkata, all the way to Bisarjan. Through those ten days, the expert camerawork of DOP Gairik Sarkar provides you with an intimate glimpse into the lives of the Bashaks as well as the intricate steps of the Durga Puja that unfold, bit by bit. You do get the feeling that you are invited to the Bashak family's " baarir Pujo" and that's what makes you festive and yearn for the Pujas in the heat of April! Bickram Ghosh's rousing music and background score , with the superb use of khol, Dhak, sarod and other instruments, stays with you long after the film is over and the folk song medley is a huge highlight of the film. The performances are all stellar starting off with Sohini Sarkar as Durga, and Tanushree Chakraborty as Manasi, who play their characters with vim and vigor. Indrashis, Kaushik Sen, Debjani, Sampurna, Sumanto Mukherjee and others provide commendable support. . Each and every character stands out, irrespective of their onscreen footage . Special mention needs to be made of Rwitobroto Mukherjee , who is delightful on screen and the very able Anirban Bhattacharya in a brief appearance. The interactions between Sohini, Tanusree and Debjani add gravitas to the film while Kaushik Sen and Indrashis Roy play contrasting brothers to perfection! Sugato Guha's lyrics always add a distinct flavor to the songs and this film is no exception. The technical team provides great support to enhance the viewing pleasure and the editing by Sujoy Datta Ray, costumes by Sabarni Das, art direction by Tanmoy Chakraborty and the classy work done by DI colorist Debojyoti Ghosh deserve special mention.
