A well-known speaker and presenter on burnout and resilience, Dr. Patterson has helped create, direct, and reorganize a range of community-partnered service experiences and programs for over forty years. In this session, she will share insights and contemplative practices from her recently released book, which recasts burnout as a normal and necessary phase of service – not a signal of failed will or selfishness. Contemplative principles organize the book’s chapters and broad strategies for working with burnout’s pain and frustration rather than deny, deflect, or give up. Chapter examples from a range of service settings highlight how service collapses and offers tailored tools and skills for working with the rubble. Exercises shape next steps, rekindling or reconstructing the fire of giving back with others.
This session is part of a monthly seminar series that gathers the third Wednesday of the month to explore questions related to contemplative science and meditation research, and is free and open to all. More information about Dr. Patterson's book (available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Routledge) is found at: bobbipattersonresilience.com
