Drawing from many oral, visual, and written versions of the Ramayana, composed by different people in different places and at different times, Devdutt Pattanaik’s Sita envisions the epic story though the eyes of its heroine. Over two evenings, February 19 and 26, Joyce Flueckiger, professor of religion at Emory, leads readers through an exploration of the roles, relationships, and rituals of Indian women, and one of the great questions of the Ramayana—why does Rama move heaven and earth to rescue Sita from Ravana, only to abandon her? Fee: $35 Carlos Museum members; $50 nonmembers, and includes the cost of the book. Space is limited and registration is required by calling 404-727-6118. |
