Sankara Nethralaya is a premium Medical Research Foundation/charitable non-profit eye institute based in Chennai, India. Dr. S.S. Badrinath who received numerous awards including the "25 Greatest Global Living Legends" award is the President and Chairman Emeritus of Sankara Nethralaya.
Dr. Seshu Sarma is the vice president of Sankara Nethralaya Opthalmic Mission Trust ( SN OM Trust) which is a non-profit tax-exempt organization (Tax ID # 52-1611548) based in Rockville, Maryland. It was established in the US in 1988 by Mr. S.V. Acharya, with the sole objective of providing financial assistance to Sankara Nethralaya for its community projects involving indigent patients in India. As a result of funds raised by the SN OM Trust in the US, thousands of well deserving men, women and children are able to receive free eye care all over India at Sankara Nethralaya's hospitals.

Sankara Nethralaya serves 1500 outpatients per day and performs about 150 surgeries daily, almost half of them at no cost to poor patients. Its branches are located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Mukundapur in Kolkata, Sri City, Nellore and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Sankara Nethralaya has plans to expand to other states in India.
The Sankara Nethralaya takes the MESUs ( Mobile Eye Surgical Units) to the door steps of the poor in rural India for free eye care, including surgical treatment. While providing state of the art eye care to those who can afford, Sankara Nethralaya ensures the same kind of premium care to thousands of indigent patients.

Over the last several years, the SN Atlanta team had raised funds to provide free eye care for thousands of patients in India. In 2016, more than 1000 indigent patients received free eye surgeries from the funds raised in Atlanta. In addition, Atlanta donors sponsored free eye camps in 2 villages in Andhra Pradesh where hundreds received free eye care, glasses and cataract surgeries on site in SN Mobile Eye Surgical Units.
