Penn Masala to Perform at Georgia Tech Saturday January 13th
by Franklin Abbott
Penn Masala, an a capella group formed in 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania, will be performing in Atlanta at the Ferst Center at Georgia Tech sponsored by Tech's India Club. This wildly popular group formed of students at U Penn has performed all over the United States and the world. The membership of the group constantly changes as older members graduate and newer members enter through auditions. The group is majority South Asian with a few non-Indian members joining from time to time.
Penn Masala's music is influenced by both Eastern and Western pop. The group has performed at the White House and for prominent leaders including Ban Ki-moon and Mukesh Ambani. They have recorded ten albums and appear on the soundtrack of American Desi. They sing in Hindi, English, and a number of other Indian languages.
Sreeramamurthy (Sree) Tripuramallu, president of the India Club at Georgia Tech is very excited about Penn Masala coming to his campus. He says it is a once in a lifetime college experience for him and many of the members of his club. The India Club at Georgia Tech has over 700 members and serves as a social nexus for students of Indian descent on the Atlanta campus. The club sponsors several major events ever year including a Diwali celebration in November and a Holi show featuring local dance teams in the Spring. The Penn Masala show will open with a performance by Tanishq, an all-women Atlanta dance team.
Tickets to the event are available through the India Club's Facebook page and are $21 for the general public, $8 for Tech students and $5 for India Club members. Here is a link for the tickets: https://tickets.gtindiaclub.com/pennmasala
