Q&A with Ambassador Arun Singh, former Ambassador of India to USA
Q&A with Ambassador Arun Singh, former Ambassador of India to USA
Presented by Emory University's Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives
Topic: "Leapfrogging Technology: Opportunities for India Amidst Globalization Uncertainties"
India has some unique strengths and challenges. It has sustained high rates of growth over the past decade and more and is today the fastest growing economy in the world, but large numbers still live in poverty, and a fourth of the population does not have access to commercial energy. Still, start-ups in India have attracted large investments over the past two years. India has leapfrogged technology in mobile communication in the last decade and is now striving to do so in financial technology. The bulk of the population comprises people below the age of 35, and this demography is seen as a potential dividend; however, globally, the headwinds are of jobless growth. In this period of backlash to globalization, what is the opportunity for India to meet economic and technological needs differently? What will be the new potential for partnership between India and the U.S., including in third countries?
Arun Singh was the Indian Ambassador to the United States from 2015 to 2016. He is now a senior fellow with the Asia program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Before taking charge as Ambassador in the United States he was serving as Ambassador of India to France in Paris.
