*SarvEndriyAnAm Nayanam PradhAnam - Sanskrit Saying*

*The eye is the lamp of the body. - Matthew 6:22*

Of all the senses that a human being is blessed with, vision or eye sight is unique. Because it blesses a person to see the creation of God, the manifest Universe. Apart from that, vision is essential for living and to live independently.

But, the prevalence of eye diseases that lead to *preventable* blindness either in childhood or in adult life are rampant. India has one fourth of all blind people in the world. Eighty percent of blindness is preventable. Most  blindness occurs in people above 50 years age.

Apart from the age old problem of cataract in adults, now India is facing a rising problem of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Diabetes has become an epidemic in India with 7.1% Indians being  diabetic with an average age of 41 years. According to the World Health Organization forecast, by the year 2030 the Indian Subcontinent will become the hotbed of diabetes. This will be a huge burden on the national health care system and economy. Obviously, the governmental resources alone cannot cope up with this burden. The NGOs need to step in and help in the nation building. Any country's economic development is dependent on the health of its people.  *Blindness can make a person far less productive than any other disease*.

So please consider supporting Sankara Netralaya, which is doing a commendable and selfless service in India. Apart from treating cataract in people who cannot afford the cost, Sankara Netralaya is working to bring state-of-the-art technology to grassroot levels for early diagnosis, which saves vision in a number of people and also cuts costs and health care burden.

Not all of us can go to India and do the service. But we can definitely give a supporting hand to those who can work at the grassroot levels in India. The help can come in different forms - suppurting the cause by monetary donations or logistic help or spreading the news etc.

Tomorrow there is an awareness and fundraising event in Atlanta organized by the Sankara Netralaya. Let us support it in whichever way we can.

Thank you 🙏
BK Kishore, M.D.
