Prof. Sumarsam from Wesleyan University will deliver a lecture-demonstration about Wayang Kulit, Javanese Shadow Puppetry Arts, accompanied by live gendèr and drum music of Gamelan Master Darsono Hadiraharjo (Cornell University). This multi-sensory art from Java, Indonesia acts as a medium to preserve and transmit sacred spiritual and philosophical values. It is vibrant and deep, but also accessible to the masses.

Dr. Sumarsam is a world famous scholar of Javanese music and religion. This lecture precedes his shadow puppet performance with Emory Gamelan Ensemble: “Celebration of Arjuna,” a story from the epic Mahabharata (Sat, April 6, 5pm at Emory Performing Arts Studio).
