South Asia Seminar Series: "How Maulana Jamal Mian became Pakistani"

Emory University, South Asia Seminar Series:
Francis Robinson, Professor of the History of South Asia, Royal Holloway, University of London

speaking on
"How Maulana Jamal Mian became Pakistani"

This presentation will discuss the life and ideas of Maulana Jamal Mian (1919-2011), one of the last people fully formed in the Islamic scholarly tradition of Farangi Mahall, an intellectual tradition that deeply influenced 19th and 20th century Muslim culture in South Asia. Maulana Jamal Mian never wished to become Pakistani, even though he had fought for a separate nation-state for Muslims in the Indian subcontinent. This presentation is about the unpleasant experiences of Indian Muslims after independence, the steady imposition of technologies of the modern state in enforcing the reality of Partition, the slow realization of the elite that they were constrained by new national realities.
