Kalpataru

January 1 (Monday) 2:30-3:30pm - Kalpataru Day Observance - Join us in the Chapel. Followed by snacks and fellowship in the Monastery, 3:30pm to 4:30pm.

In the Ramakrishna Vivekananda tradition, Kalpataru Day is an extremely significant occasion. It was on this day (January 1st) in 1886 when Sri Ramakrishna revealed himself as ‘Kalpataru’ (the 'wish-fulfilling tree') and spiritually awakened a large number of devotees who were present at the Cossipore Garden House on that sacred day. This event is commemorated annually to invoke the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna and to pray for the spiritual awakening of the devotees.

from Rita Bhandarkar-Mathew, the chanting group’s founder and leader:
January 6 (Saturday), 9am - Devi Mahatmyam Chanting

“We plan to start the year by chanting Devi Saptashati tomorrow, January 6th 2018 from 9am to 10am. Our intention is to invoke Adi Shakti in all her aspects of Kali, Lakshmi, and Saraswati for blessings, love and peace in the New Year. Swami Sarvadevanandaji has encouraged the recitation of prayers to Devi on Tuesdays and Saturdays. All are welcome and no prior experience is necessary.”

The group meets in the Center’s Chapel. For anyone interested, this will be a very auspicious way to start your New Year.

May you be well and in bright spirits,
Br. Shankara

January 14 (Sunday) 11am-12pm - “The Treasure Box Is Yours to Open”
w/ Br. Shankara
The Sage who created the Svetasvatara Upanishad said this about what he found in his deepest contemplation:
“There the sun shines not, nor the moon and stars, nor does the lightning illumine, much less this earthly fire. He alone shining, everything shines after him. By his light all this universe shines!” — Chapter 6, Verse 14
You, as a spiritual aspirant struggling to make a little progress, could easily have this reaction to the Sage’s ecstatic affirmation: “Can I — a seemingly isolated individual, making my way forward from day to day as best I can — truly share in Svetasvatara's realization of this glorious truth that unifies all experience in shining bliss?”
Happily, in a number of remarkable, timeless promises, the Great Teachers of our tradition say, Yes, you certainly can. On Sunday morning we will review and discuss those promises, and why they were made so confidently: This is the Treasure Box!
We will also define and explore your current situation, in these three categories:
Successes and gifts you've had so far in life
Challenges to your continued progress, and
Obstacles — habits that, while they persist, can “freeze you in place.”
