Four-year-olds and up at Carnatic Vidyalaya’s annual recital
Carnatic Vidyalaya, a school of Indian music for children of all ages, celebrated its Annual Day on May 11, 2019 at the Sylvia Beard Theater in Buford Community Center, Buford, Georgia.
This was an opportunity for the students to perform on stage and render great compositions. The founder and teacher of the school, Mrs. Viji Murali, performed Sri Thyagaraja’s “Thulasidala” and Sri Mysore Vasudevachar’s “Brocheva.”
Senior students rendered some of the greatest classical pieces, including Sri Papanasam Sivan’s “Enna Thavam,” Sri Annamacharya’s “Govinda Govinda,” and other great varnams.
Intermediate students performed many geethams, swarajathis, and nottu swaras along with various bhajans. Apart from the krithis, bhajans, and slokas, there were also renditions of the famous Hanuman Chalisa, Ganesha Pancharathnam, Annapoornashtagam, Krishnashtakam, and Lingashtakam by the students.
It was a great sight to watch children as young as 4 years old dressed in colorful traditional clothes, performing songs and slokas with dedication. Having the exposure to traditional music at an early age helps preserve the bond with our culture. These children can connect with Indian tradition and culture more easily, even if they live thousands of miles away from our homeland. As a token of appreciation and encouragement, each student was awarded a trophy.
