Locals Network With Indian Telecom Delegation

The GIACC held a networking dinner with the Indian Telecom delegation, which was in town to attend the SuperCom event in Atlanta. The dignitaries included Mr. Vinod Vaish, Chairman & Secretary; Mr. Narender Sharma of MTNL; Mr. Prithipal Singh of BSML; Mr. Vijay Kumar, Director General; and other senior telecom delegates. The event, held at the Palace Restaurant on June 5th, was attended by 50 GIACC members and their guests.

After a networking session, Mr. S. P. Reddy ? the president of GIACC ? spoke about its purpose and said that he was looking forward to working with such delegations to help establish business and trade relationships within the telecom sector. Mr. Vaish spoke of the phenomenal growth in the Indian telecom sector and pointed out the regulatory progress made to create an environment conducive for growth. His main emphasis was to encourage manufacturing investment in India because currently much of the instrumentation and equipment are manufactured overseas. Referring to the automotive and software sectors, where India is such a significant player, he remarked that the telecom sector should be no different.

Mr. Sharma spoke of the strides made in the telecom industry in terms fiber optics, fixed line networks, etc. He reminded the audience of the long way India has to go when compared to other developing countries such as Mexico and China. Mr. Singh, the last speaker, mentioned the challenges facing the industry in rural areas, where the economic development is not significant enough to sustain and pay for the telecom infrastructure. He also outlined the role of the government is such areas, where it may not be lucrative for the private enterprise to participate. Finally, during a brief Q & A session, the delegates responded to questions from the audience.
