Preventive Health Takes Center Stage at GATeS and Care Bridge Initiative 5K
On October 12, the Greater Atlanta Telangana Society (GATeS) and Care Bridge Initiative hosted a vibrant morning of fitness and preventive health education at Chattahoochee Pointe Park in Suwanee, Georgia. The 5K Walk & Run brought together families, students, and healthcare professionals from across the Atlanta area, united by a shared commitment to healthier living and community engagement.

The day began with a lively stretching and Zumba session led by Shireesha Mantri, setting an upbeat tone. Participants then took to the scenic trails along the Chattahoochee River, enjoying both the exercise and the sense of connection the event fostered.
Following the run, Care Bridge Initiative organized a preventive health education session featuring expert speakers who shared actionable guidance on managing chronic diseases common in the South Asian community:
- Dr. Sreeni Gangasani, cardiologist with the Cardiovascular Group, spoke on heart disease prevention and lifestyle modifications.
- Dr. Vijaya Gunna, endocrinologist with Endocrinology and Diabetes of Georgia, addressed diabetes risk and management.
- Shobha Swamy, certified Food for Life instructor with Annapoorna Holistic Nutrition, offered culturally relevant dietary tips for heart health.
Medical students from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Georgia Hearts Club added hands-on learning through blood pressure screenings and CPR demonstrations.
Care Bridge Initiative, founded by Suma Gangasani, focuses on expanding access to healthcare and preventive education. “Hearing about these tragedies time and again—many affecting young people—is a reminder that chronic diseases and cardiac issues can impact anyone,” she said. “Prevention starts early, with activity, balanced nutrition, and regular checkups— even if you feel fine.”
The event concluded with an awards ceremony for top 5K finishers and a healthy breakfast spread. Organizers expressed gratitude to Naveen Battini, President of GATeS, the GATeS Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and volunteers including Pranavi Edupuganti, Nanda Chatla, and PCOM Georgia Hearts, for their vital contributions.
Proceeds from the event will support the Hope Clinic in Lawrenceville, Georgia, through donations of housekeeping and medical supplies to help the nonprofit further its mission of providing care to those with limited or no access to healthcare.
The 5K’s success underscored the power of collective action in promoting preventive health. Attendees described the event as uplifting and family-friendly—a reminder that community, awareness, and small daily habits all play a role in building a healthier future.
