On August 16, 2025, the Indian Friends of Atlanta (IFA) hosted its 11th Annual Freedom Mela at the Cumming Fairgrounds, marking the 79th Indian Independence Day on August 15, and kicking off the second decade of celebrating the spirit of freedom. Since its inception in 2015, the Freedom Mela has become a beloved tradition in Atlanta, attracting thousands to celebrate the shared values of freedom and unity between India and the United States.

This year’s event was a vibrant and joyous gathering, with over 6,500 attendees enjoying a range of cultural performances, including an energetic concert by the “Prince of Bhangra,” Sukhbir Singh. The event also featured a grand parade, showcasing colorful displays of traditional Indian attire and music from its diverse geographic and cultural mosaic.

A central highlight of the day was the Grand Parade, led by the IFA team, with drum beats and vibrant performances by various state teams, all showcasing regional dances, music, and cultural symbols. The parade concluded with the lively sounds of Dhol Tasha and Lezim dancing, leaving everyone in high spirits.

Local and state dignitaries, including Georgia State Representatives and Forsyth County officials, were present to honor the occasion and praise the Indian community’s significant contributions to Georgia’s cultural landscape and economic profile. The event further exemplified IFA’s mission to foster cultural pride, celebrate Indian heritage, and bring communities together in a spirit of friendship and unity.

IFA’s founder, Chairman Sunil Savili, and President Sreekanth Uppala, alongside the founding members and executive committee, expressed heartfelt thanks to the sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and attendees, whose ongoing support has been instrumental in the success of the Freedom Mela year after year. The event was made possible through collaboration with numerous Indian-American organizations and local businesses, whose contributions continue to drive the Mela’s growth year after year.

With over 6,500 guests in attendance, the event exceeded expectations, with a festive atmosphere brought to life by the tireless IFA team and their dedicated volunteers. The venue was beautifully adorned with Indian and American flags, a lighted “I Love IFA” display, and arches of tricolored balloons. The stage featured digital backdrops showcasing Indian monuments, adding a modern twist to the cultural performances creating a truly patriotic ambiance.

The event was emceed by Lakshmi Mandavilli, Bhrushira Vyas, Vikas Rattan Goyal, and Srivani Krishna, who kept the crowd entertained with humor and professionalism. Performances from Atlanta-based arts academies, which included patriotic music and dance, delighted attendees of all ages.

A significant moment in the event included the hoisting of the American and Indian flags by Representative Todd Jones and the IFA team, while a youth chair organized by KT Sravanthi sang the national anthems, bringing the crowd together in a collective display of patriotism.

IFA’s President, Sreekanth Uppala, introduced the founding members and the executive committee, welcoming the audience and congratulating them on the 79th Indian Independence Day. Several notable local and state dignitaries were honored during the event, including U.S. Representative Buddy Carter, Georgia State Senators Emmanuel Jones and Josh McLaurin, Georgia State Representatives Todd Jones, Ruwa Romman, David Clark, Dr. Michelle Au, Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin Gatson, and Dilip Tunki, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Johns Creek.

Chairman Sunil Savili expressed deep appreciation for the sponsors, volunteers, and the vibrant community support that helps make the Freedom Mela a standout event every year. The evening’s festivities were capped by a high-energy live concert by the “Prince of Bhangra” Sukhbir Singh, whose performance, alongside four top drummers, got the entire audience dancing and celebrating.

IFA extends its gratitude to the very cooperative Cumming Fairgrounds staff and the officers of the City of Cumming Police Department for their cooperation, ensuring the event ran smoothly and safely.

The success of the 11th Annual Freedom Mela reinforces IFA’s commitment to celebrating cultural pride, unity, and community spirit. As the organization continues to grow, IFA remains dedicated to fostering connections that highlight Indian culture and its contributions to the diverse cultural tapestry of Atlanta.
