Manoj ‘Bharat’ Kumar breathes his last

The film fraternity bid a tearful farewell to renowned actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, fondly known as Bharat Kumar, who breathed his last in a Mumbai hospital on April 4, after a prolonged illness. He was 87. Though Manoj Kumar (born Harikrishna Goswami) began acting in the late 1950s, it was the 1965 film Shaheed, where he played the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, which proved to be the turning point in his career. The seed of what was to later become Manoj Kumar’s distinctive brand of patriotic films was actually sown with Shaheed.
Bringing the struggles and aspirations of a newly independent nation on screen, Manoj became a symbol of India’s growing national pride, and his films like Upkar (his first directorial), Purab Aur Paschim, and Kranti became iconic hits. Manoj also played the lover boy in some romantic movies.
