Angrezi Medium, which is the sequel to Hindi Medium, is a classic example of what goes wrong when there are too many cooks serving up a dish. No less than four writers are credited with the story, and yet (or may be because of this) the script is largely a convoluted mess, turning out to be choppy and disjointed at places. But the film never loses its grip on the audience’s emotions, thanks to the top-notch performances by the cast, led by the absolutely fabulous Irrfan Khan.
Angrezi Medium is the story of how far an Udaipur-based sweet shop owner and doting single parent, Champak Bansal (Irrfan Khan) will go to get his teenage daughter, Tarika (Radhika Madan) admitted in a prestigious college in the UK, which she has set her heart on. If Hindi Medium was far-fetched, Angrezi Medium goes even further, becoming a little farcical at times.
Irrfan Khan was critically ill when he shot for the film, which makes his performance even more clap worthy. Deepak Dobriyal is another fine actor, and there is such pleasure in seeing Irrfan and Deepak riffing off each other. Radhika Madan is an absolute natural, capturing the innocence of a 17-year-old perfectly. Kareena Kapoor as tough cop Naina and Dimple Kapadia as her mother Mrs. Kohli are good but underutilized, and one never really understands why they are at loggerheads!
Despite its inconsistencies, Angrezi Medium is worth a watch for two reasons—the topicality of its theme (the youth’s obsession with studying abroad), and Irrfan Khan’s effortless and moving act.
