MOVIE REVIEW: Chidiya (Shuttlecock)
Chidiya (Shuttlecock)
Starring: Vinay Pathak, Amruta Subhash, Svar Kamble, Ayush Pathakor
Director: Mehran Amrohi
Music Director: Shailendra Barve
Though it was completed in 2015, it took almost a decade for the internationally acclaimed Chidiya to hit the theaters in its own country, India. A sad irony indeed! But far from looking dated, this so-called “small” movie with a big heart has come as a breath of fresh air for audiences starved of simple yet poignant cinema.
Set in a Mumbai chawl, the film tells the story of its two young protagonists, Shanu (Svar Kamble) and Bua (Ayush Pathak), who are compelled to share the financial burden of their mother after the sudden demise of their father. Their chance encounter with Shreyas Talpade (playing himself) on a film set—he gifts Shanu a shuttlecock—sparks a dream which turns into a mission for the boys. But for one reason or the other, their dream of playing badminton (the chidiya wala game) remains unfulfilled. They don't give up.
The supremely talented Amruta Subhash shines as the widowed Vaishnavi. Her anguish at seeing her children lose their childhood is palpable, as is her steely strength. Vinay Pathak as Uncle Bali brings a perfect blend of humor and heart to the narrative. But it is the two young leads, Svar and Ayush, who are the soul of this bittersweet movie. Showing maturity beyond their years, the child actors steal your heart with their effortless and endearing performances.
In an era of loud, over the top cinema—where emotion often feels diluted—Chidiya is a rare gem, a precious ode to childhood dreams. Don't miss it.
