This nostalgia-laden romcom with shades of 500 Days of Summer has its moments and is a delight for Bollywood music lovers. The leads share a love for the golden oldies of Hindi movies. Unfortunately, all this doesn’t translate into a consistently engaging movie. The scenes that stand out in this love story, ironically, are the ones which feature the hero’s chaotic, happy Bengali family.

Abhimanyu Roy (Ayushmann Khurrana) aka Bubla is a pulp fiction writer who continues to carry a torch for his neighbor and childhood crush, Bindu (Parineeti Chopra), an aspiring singer. Faced with writer’s block, he decides to pen an emotional love story drawn from his own life and gives it the title Meri Pyaari Bindu. Remember the classic Kishore Kumar ditty from the 1968 hit, Padosan?

So the narrative, quite predictably and annoyingly, goes back and forth in time as Abhimanyu reflects on his relationship with Bindu.

Ayushmann is likeable enough, though repetitive, as the hopeless lover who is unable to get his first crush out of his head. As the restless, somewhat fickle and quirky Bindu, Parineeti is sincere, but falls short of a little maturity that was needed to play the hero’s elusive fantasy. She shines in a few scenes, though. Aparajita Auddy needs a special mention. She is superbly convincing as Abhi’s mother.

An undeniable asset of the film is its music, and here, Parineeti, with her fresh and original voice, is the surprise package.
