MOVIE REVIEW: OK Jaanu

OK Jaanu

Starring: Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah
Producers: Mani Ratnam, Karan Johar
Director: Shaad Ali
Music Director: A. R. Rahman

OK Jaanu is a faithful, almost scene-by-scene remake of the Tamil hit OK Kanmani that Mani Ratnam wrote and directed two years ago. So, while it is certainly watchable, Shaad Ali brings nothing new to the screen really. Even the leads reprise their natural chemistry of Aashiqui 2! But unfortunately, the charisma of the young lovers in the original is missing here.

Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a video game developer who has starry American dreams, while aspiring architect Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) wants to make it big in Paris. Sparks fly between the two and they decide to live in and have a ‘no strings attached’ romance, in other words, a relationship with ‘less drama’ for those few days that they have, before they fly off to pursue their career goals.

Unfortunately, for the movie, too, this translates into hardly any drama in the plot and a conflict that is mostly lacklustre. In any case, commitment phobia as a theme has been done to death in Bollywood. What’s more, you know from the outset where the film is heading even though the leads seem clueless!

The real love story here is of the couple’s landlord, Gopi Srivastava (Naseeruddin Shah in terrific form) and his Alzheimer’s stricken wife, Charu (Leela Samson). Their ‘golden jubilee’ marriage leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling, and saves the movie from becoming frivolous.

Aditya’s goofy man-child act is charming and Shraddha is sincere. But it is Shah and Leela Samson who make OK Jaanu worth a watch.

So, do that. Watch it for them.
