MOVIE REVIEW: Raid2

Raid2
Starring: Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Vaani Kapoor
Director: Raj Kumar Gupta
Music Directors: Amit Trivedi, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Rochak Kohli, Sachet-Parampara
Ajay Devgn is back after seven years as the irrepressible IRS officer Amay Patnaik, but this time we see him in the fictitious town of Bhuj, going after and having a face-off with his new target, the wily Dada Manohar Bhai, played by Riteish Deshmukh. There are other new faces too—Vaani Kapoor replaces Ileana DCruz as Patnaik’s supportive wife Malini, and Supriya Pathak is aptly cast as Riteish’s mother.
All these changes, however, don't do much to lift the crime thriller to great heights. In fact, while the original Raid impressed with its compelling premise and strong writing, the tedious search for unaccounted money seems repetitive and contrived in the sequel. Also, the narrative structure is uneven, and the songs (which seem unnecessary) take away from the overall impact of the movie.
The performances, though, cannot be faulted. Riteish Deshmukh, who keeps the sinister energy of his character understated, makes for a fine anti-hero. Amit Sial as Lallan Sudheer Singh is a hoot, and both he and Yashpal Sharma add a layer of intrigue to the movie. The two also get to mouth the best lines. The terrific Saurabh Shukla returns as Tauji, albeit in a special appearance.
Ajay Devgn, of course, portrays the old-school heroism with swag, putting his solid comic timing to good use. You can watch
Raid 2 for him and Riteish Deshmukh.
