Student of the Year 2 isn’t unwatchable. It just seems pointless! Also, while Student of the Year was also silly, it did have an emotional core which kept you interested in the characters.
The super-talented Rohan Sachdev (Tiger Shroff) aspires for admission into Dehradun’s hallowed St. Teresa because his childhood sweetheart Mridula aka Mia (debutante Tara Sutaria) is there. But when he does land there through the sports quota, he first meets spoilt brat Shreya Randhawa (debutante Ananya Panday). So Rohan’s arrival at the upscale college upsets many equations, with both the girls vying for his attention.
Tiger Shroff as lover boy, sprinter, kabaddi champ, and dance freak all rolled into one, tries to carry most of the film on his well-toned shoulders, but the script and screenplay are too clunky to let him. Tara’s character is lazily written and Ananya tries too hard to make her presence felt. But yes, she does show some spunk. Aditya Seal is impressive as the campus bully, but sloppy writing lets him down, too.
Oh yes, Will Smith and Alia Bhatt make an appearance, too.
Vishal-Shekhar are not in their element here: there isn’t a single song that you could take away from the film except maybe the Jawaani Deewani remix.
Tiger Shroff had said in an interview that viewers shouldn’t bring their thinking caps. Agree with him—that’s the only way to enjoy this mediocre fare which is all sheen and no substance.
