MOVIE REVIEW: Sunny Sanskari ki Tulsi Kumari
Param Sundari
Starring: Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf
Director: Shashank Khaitan
Music Directors: Tanishk Bagchi, Sachet-Parampara, Guru Randhawa
The premise of this romantic comedy, with a title that’s a mouthful, is reminiscent of the 1997 Julia Roberts-starrer My Best Friend's Wedding. It’s an idea that has been toyed with in other Hollywood romcoms as well; still, despite its lack of originality, comic moments are cleverly created in the script to keep the momentum going.
Nursing broken hearts after being dumped by their respective partners, Sunny (Varun Dhawan) and Tulsi (Janhvi Kapoor) team up to crash the wedding of their exes, Ananya and Vikram (Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf), hoping to win back their love. It’s a wild merry-go-round of break-ups and hook-ups but the climax feels rushed and illogical.
As far as performances go, we see Varun Dhawan again doing what he is best at—entertain effortlessly with his impeccable comic timing. Janhvi is earnest in her portrayal of a plain Jane turned spunky but she falters a bit in the emotional scenes. The talented Sanya Malhotra manages to make an impact, despite being saddled with an underwritten role.
Rohit Saraf is impressive as the rich guy Vikram. Maniesh Paul, who has such fun playing Kuku the wedding planner, gets a special mention. It’s fun to watch him. Abhinav Sharma, as the hero’s friend Buntu, is endearingly cute.
So, if you are not too finicky, you will enjoy this breezy film peppered with social messages.
