There’s hardly any plot to speak of, but Piku is one of those rare films that entrance you because of the sheer brilliance of their writing. Characters that are so real and conversations that crackle with humor and poignancy, lift this ‘slice of life’ film to a sublime level, while ironically dealing with something as mundane as toilet travails.

Piku (Deepika Padukone) is a successful young architect who juggles between her career and taking care of her 70-yearold father, Bhashkor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan) who can be quite a handful. He is a hypochondriac obsessed with his bowel movements, and almost all talk in their Chittaranjan Park home in New Delhi revolves around the cranky old man’s daily potty trouble. Into the eccentric lives of the father and daughter comes a ray of sanity in the form of Rana Chowdhury (Irrfan Khan), a private cab company owner, who drives them from Delhi to Kolkata.

Deepika Padukone is simply outstanding as the exasperated daughter. Now here’s an actress who has grown by leaps and bounds. It’s a performance that never feels like a performance, she’s that good. It’s to her credit that Deepika stands tall, quite literally, alongside stupendous actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan. Just one flaw: Amitabh’s Bengali accent slips at times.

Anupam Roy’s musical score enhances the film’s delicate emotional texture.

Piku must be watched for its refreshingly quirky take on a deeply layered father-daughter relationship that borders on the dysfunctional.
