Movie Review Agneepath

Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor

Producer: Karan Johar
Director: Karan Malhotra
Music Directors: Ajay-Atul

Twenty-two years after Amitabh Bachchan played Vijay Deenanath Chauhan in Mukul Anand’s Agneepath, the iconic character is brought alive again by Hrithik Roshan in Karan Johar’s tribute to the cult film, directed by debutant Karan Malhotra—but the new version is not a carbon copy of the original. Besides the screenplay being given a fresh texture, the character of Krishnan Iyer M.A. (portrayed by Mithun Chakraborty in the 1990 film) is done away with while a new negative character, Rauf Lala is introduced to add a menacing twist to the tale.

The strengths of the new Agneepath: terrific performances by the entire cast, especially Hrithik, Sanjay Dutt (outstanding as the brutal bad guy Kancha Cheena) and Rishi Kapoor who steals the show with his villainous Rauf Lala act; amazing screenplay and fantastic cinematography; not to forget the sizzling Chikni Chameli number performed with great gusto by Katrina Kaif. The film’s weaknesses: a lackluster romantic track, excessive violence, and its length.

Priyanka Chopra’s performance as Kaali is a carryover of her Kaminey role and she does it with élan. The dialogues are in sync with the mood of the movie. While the background score is impressive, there is nothing special about the songs, except the Chikni Chameli number.

All in all, this new saga of the old vendetta theme is certainly worth a viewing because of the punch it packs. But how much you enjoy it will actually depend on how much melodramatic intensity and violence you can take!
